The creators of “Myst” have closed a deal for Legendary Entertainment to turn the game into a series.

Legendary has yet to decide whether the project will become a traditional TV or digital show.

In the game, first published in 1993, players take the role of the Stranger, who uses a special book to travel to the mysterious island of Myst where they must solve puzzles to reveal the backstories of characters and use books they find to travel to other worlds.

Deal was made with Legendary’s TV and Digital Media arm, run by Bruce Rosenblum.

“Myst” creators Rand and Robyn Miller will be creatively involved with the adaptation through their firm Cyan.

The Millers see the Legendary deal as a way to not only create a compelling TV drama but to develop a true transmedia franchise that includes a companion video game and other platforms, particularly tablets, to expand plot points.

Since its launch, the “Myst” franchise has included “Riven,” three additional sequels and “Myst Online: Uru,” which altogether have sold more than 15 million copies. It’s also spun off a series of novels, including bestseller “Myst: The Book of Atrus.”

Based in Spokane, Wash., Cyan is currently developing its next title, “Obduction.”
